Seasonal and interannual variability of feeding in Antarctic benthos

چکیده
The seasonal and interannual variability of feeding in 15 species benthic marine suspension feeder was studied over 8 yr at Ryder Bay, Antarctica. Feeding strongly bryozoans, gorgonians, polychaetes, dendrochirote holothurians. winter non-feeding period longest the holothurians shortest bryozoans. Bryozoans started late very low chlorophyll concentrations, often when surface fast-ice still present. In hydroids actinians, tentacles were deployed continuously throughout year, though hydroid intensity declined slightly winter. Water column phytoplankton biomass with marked timing bloom, driven principally by ice dynamics. Correlation across years between start development bloom poor, seasons a dense spring filamentous microalgae developed, many delayed. This study indicates that feeders Antarctica is influenced factors additional to availability food water column.

Seasonal to interannual variability in Antarctic sea-ice surface melt
Satellite remote sensing time-series images are used to illustrate the spatial and temporal variability in Antarctic-wide seaice surface melting during the austral summer. Combinations of collocated data from the Active Microwave Instrument on board the ERS-1/2 spacecraft, RadarSat Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and SSM/I passive microwave radiometer are used in characterization of the effects ...

The Labrador Sea, as one of a few places of deep water formation, plays an important role in the Meridional Overturning Circulation. While the interior of the Labrador Sea, where the deepest convection takes place, is known to experience variability on time scales ranging from days to decades, little is known about the variability of the other components of the Labrador Sea circulation the boun...

متن کاملSeasonal and Interannual Trends in Antarctic Ice Sheet Microwave Data
Time-series microwave satellite observations are used to investigate seasonal and interannual changes in the surface characteristics of the Antarctic ice sheet. Enhanced-resolution Cband ERS-1/2 scatterometer (ESCAT) backscatter and DMSP SSMI brightness temperature images of Antarctica, acquired on a 3-day interval between 1992 and 1997, have been analysed. Both ESCAT and SSMI data show a clear...
متن کاملInterannual and Seasonal Variability of Macroinvertebrates in Monsoonal Climate Streams
The aim of this study was to assess the interannual and seasonal changes in the community composition, abundance and presence-absence of macroinvertebrates in the streams of the northwestern of Argentina. The importance of environmental variability in determining these changes was also analyzed. Macroinvertebrates were collected in eleven streams during high (March) and low (September) water pe...
